Thanks ELI
This past week billionaire collector, Eli Broad, officially announced he will move ahead with plans to open a new contemporary art museum in Beverly Hills. The new 25,000 square foot institution will house the Broad Art Foundation and permanent collection, including seminal works by Jean Michel Basquiat, Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Damien Hirst. The announcement comes less that a year after Broad gifted $56 million in funds to open the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Broad Contemporary Art Museum........
Broad’s philanthropic pursuits don’t stop here. This week he offered an additional $30 million to help keep Los Angeles MOCA afloat. As previously reported, the museum has burned up its funds and is is on the brink of financial disaster. In a Nov. 21 LA Times op-ed, Broad said, ”I’d like to make a proposal to the MOCA board and to the civic angels of Los Angeles. I’ll step up if you do too. The Broad Art Foundation is prepared to make a significant investment in MOCA — $30 million…It is vital that the museum remain on Grand Avenue, keep its collection and continue its tradition of world-class exhibitions…This is not a one-philanthropist town…with a global recession that has hit every American’s pocketbook, charitable giving has declined…The philanthropic community must not turn its back on MOCA. We must make it one of our civic priorities.”
In total, Broad’s spending would represent a cash injection into Los Angeles’ art institutions in excess of $1 billion."

Modern Day Underground Lair
Move over Dr. Evil, there is a newer, more badass underground lair, but it doesn't have sharks with frickin' laser beams on their heads.
The project takes place in a former 1200 square meter anti-atomic shelter. An amazing location 30 meters down under the granite rocks of the Vita Berg Park in Stockholm. The client is an internet provider and the rock shelter hosts server halls and offices. The starting point of the project was to consider the rock as a living organism. The humans try to acclimate themselves to this foreign world and bring the ‘best’ elements from earth: light, plants, water and technology. We created strong contrasts between rooms where the rock dominates and where the human being is a stranger against rooms where the human being took over totally...Architects: Albert France-Lanord Architects
Location: Stockholm, Sweden
Photographs: Åke E:son Lindman
From: archdaily
One can describe the process in five different phases:
-planning
-destruction of the former office and blowing up the rock to create extra space.
-reinforce the cave. concrete work.
-technical installations. electrical.
-glass and steel work. paint and furnishing.

The client had a strong vision from the first brief and the result is only possible because of their persistence, the absence of compromise and great communication/ understanding between all parts under the process.
It has been very exciting to work with a space which at first didn’t offer one square angle: the rock. The main room is not a traditional space limited by surfaces but defined by the emptiness inside a mass.Read More......

CoCo Chanel Coin
For the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Coco Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld designed a special 5 Euro coin. The coin features both a portrait of Coco Chanel and lots of other trademark graphics of the brand. The 5 Euro coin was chosen, as it is a good match with the Chanel No. 5 fragrance. The coin comes in a gold version, limited to 99 pieces, with each piece going for 5900 Euros. The silver coin goes for 45 Euro and comes in a run of 11900. The coins will be released on December 1st.
David Choe: Exodus From The Land Of Play
"in the land of play ,the sky’s rain fried cheese bread, there is non-stop fun and unlimited freedom, children are encouraged to commit acts of vandalism, fight, drink beer out of unicorn horns, smoke cigars that turn into bubblicious, and gamble and never lose, nuns show you their shaved vaginas and preach, up all night , sleep all day, where everyone plays and never works, where a kid can be a kid, and also where a man can also behave like a kid, do what you want, whenever you want there’s no responsibilities, no cops, no rules, no repercussions, and no consequences to any of your actions, but all good things must come to an end, I won’t tell you what happened, but everyone has to leave immediately, get the fuck out now! So Our heroine and androgynous vamp, donning royal robes and axl rose gear , leads a parade of donkey eared miscreants and ne’er –do wells armed with customized super soakers filled with gummy worm juice and milk from coco crispies(I won’t name them all , but Darth Nihilus, razorback, and Beta ray Bill are up in the mix), out of Cockaigne, maybe to wander the earth forever?"What a crazy place & what a crazy guy.
Umbuster
The design concept phenomenon known as the Umbuster has finally jumped out of that nightmare you have about an old man beating you to a pulp in the street into cold, hard reality. That's right—you can start using this knuckle-dusting umbrella to bust up jawbones right now (assuming that it is legal to own in your area that is).

Nom de Guerre Marine Cardigan & Sweater
Just in time for winter, this new Nom de Guerre Cardigan & Sweater combo is just heavy enough to keep you warm while staying so fresh and so clean. Both are knit from a 60/40 wool acrylic blend which gives the mariners a nice finished look. Get them while you can from Blackbird.
Glassy Glassy
The Mac (Mac Funamizu) cannot be stopped when it comes to design conceptualization. Dubbed "Glassy Glassy" phones by Funamizu, these crazy clear cellys would definitely need protective cases to make it through a day in my pocket, or any other regular human-being for that matter. And with a full-glass (and a little bit of plastic) construction, I wouldn’t be using it on anything but pure-pc-clean-hands days. Who knows if these will ever make it to the marketplace but they're a great example of modern design so who cares!

Art.Genius.RIPO
In RIPO's own words: Soy Tu Sueño (I’m Your Dream) painted on the Centro Cultural de España in Lima, Peru in a familiar color scheme. "Some might see this as a sarcastic crack at the immigration issues between the two countries. Other people might see this piece and think of their own dreams and what they might be…" Check out ripovisuals for more DOPE art & peep more of RIPO's work after the jump..

The Aqua Tower

The Aqua Tower by Studio Gang Architects is currently under construction but the project looks amazing. The building promises a sculptural shape reminding the geologic shapes from the great lakes region. The bold architecture for this hotel and residential with retail and commercial spaces building was awarded with the American Architecture Award and by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture & Design. It will measure 823 feet high and it’s scheduled for completion for the Summer of 2009. Chi-Town's got it goin on!
Louis Vuitton iPod Case
Though this case does not really do justice to this piece that Louis Vuitton created for famed designer Karl Lagerfeld it's still HARD AS NAILS. The Louis Vuitton iPod case houses an entire army of iPods, as well as a full speaker system. The box comes in black leather and carried on the top Karl’s initials. I'm in talks with LV about getting a Leased Ferrari version, watch out for it on the block.

Faile Prayer Wheels
Faile has really taken urban medium to another level by infusing their “spin” on an age old spiritual instrument. True to the original spiritual Prayer Wheels found in Asia, the detailed graphic carvings on the Prayer Wheels are designed to spin around and be used as a visual aid to enhance the user’s focus and prayers. Faile’s creation of these true to life and intricate Prayer Wheels showed that these are not just flimsy ornaments slapped together for cosmetic purposes. Each hefty Prayer Wheel is hand-carved from Merbau wood, mounted and rotates on a steel base; 12 to 14 inches in diameter and 29 inches in height with an approx weight - 100 pounds! Talk about “Visions of Faile”… now this takes on a whole new meaning!

Long Live BANKSY

Every street artist's favorite badboy BANKSY just released a new print titled 'Nola' based off of a piece he did during a recent trip to New Orleans. The 'Nola' print was released this morning via: pow and sold out in 5 seconds (literally) so the best you can do is enjoy these pics and keep your ears to the street for his next release. Happy hunting.
BOOMBENCH
Listening to the music in an open environment, garden or park, while enjoying the natural surroundings is an entirely different experience, but it’s not easy to move your bulky speakers and players every single time you go for your regular stroll in the garden. However, German industrial designer Michael Schoner has come up with an innovative speaker design, ‘Boombench,’ that converts a regular street bench into a sound system. Coming in the size of a regular park bench, the Boombench features eight 60-watt co-axial speakers and two subwoofers that play music from passing mobile phones and PMPs through Bluetooth. No need for a Ghettoblaster anymore, this bench is FRESH!

D-Barcode
From Japan comes these Barcodes that aren't just artistic and creative, but actually work when scanned. Instead of mudane lines used solely for their function, these barcodes make use of form and fucntion. Japanese company D-Barcode is revolutionizing an otherwise boring industry.
Imagine a Limited Edition, "Collector's" or famous artist Barcode line featuring artists like Kaws, Murakami, Banksy, Choe, etc. We could soon see products being purchased not for what they are, but for the scanable barcode stamped on them. Genius.
Nike x Gucci Air-Force II
Nike has been reviving the Air-Force II with some interesting new colorways. Here is their latest version the Air-Force II "Gucci". It comes in all black, from the soles, to the swoosh, to the laces, its all black. The only colors are the unmistakable red/green of the Gucci logo on the upper heal. The shoe is made out of a variety of different leathers, and you can expect only the best for this collaboration.
