Our good friend RIPO just put out this beautiful print "Heart For Haiti" with all proceeds going to Medicos Sin Fronteras (Doctors Without Borders). RIPO had this to say about his project:
"One day after the devastating earthquake in Haiti I went out and painted a wall in Barcelona with the simple message "Heart For Haiti." After painting this it felt like painting just to raise awareness wasn't enough so I asked my friends at Zubmarino Prodz. for help with releasing a print to benefit an organization that has already done so much in Haiti and around the world, Medicos Sin Fronteras (Doctors Without Borders). Since the earthquake they've helped more than 28000 patients, performed nearly 3000 operations, and have more than 20 sites set up around the country. And since being founded in 1971 they've worked in nearly 60 continues to provide independent and impartial medical assistance for people who suffer from violence, neglect, or catastrophe."

Welding Wood | CuldeSac
Spanish design group Culde Sac had this to say about Welding Wood;
"We have brought back two different production techniques of traditional furniture making (lathe joined wood and steam bentwood) both came in a different period of time, and both are good examples of production technique innovations at that time.
We have combined them in a clear way to generate what we have defined as “Welding Wood.” Where two pieces connect, the section of the wood increases, and once this is done the wood is curved to achieve the structure and functionality." Whatever they did it worked out to be a pretty cool table design with undulating curves and practical functionality. (via)

Loving It | The "How Many Billboards" Project

"The philosophical proposition of the exhibition is simple: art should occupy a visible position in the cacophony of mediated images in the city, and it should do so without merely adding to the visual noise. How Many Billboards? Art In Stead proposes that art periodically displace advertisement in the urban environment.
Billboards are a dominant feature of the landscape in Los Angeles. Thousands line the city's thoroughfares, delivering high-end commercial messages to a repeat audience. Given outdoor advertising's strong presence in public space, it seems reasonable and exciting to set up the possibility for art to be present in this field. The sudden existence of artistic speech mixed in with commercial speech provides a refreshing change of pace. Commercial messaging tells you to buy; artistic messaging encourages you to look and to think..." Keep reading, and see more photos after the leap...

Time and space allotted for artworks in commercial space is limited, and the sea of signs is vast. How can a billboard exhibition make a strong enough impact? Most importantly, the art cannot be passive. It must take a strategic approach, be critically oriented, and explore the billboard as a site.
Artistically and culturally, Los Angeles is an aggregate of dynamic histories. Experimental architecture has been active here since the early twentieth century, radical art since the 1950s. An acute awareness of urban space has always influenced both avant-garde architectural and art practices in Los Angeles. Southern California's overlaps and interweaves of architectural adventurism, pop, and Conceptual Art have generated rich environments for artistic production and yielded influential bodies of art. My co-curators and I felt that these So-Cal syntheses are relevant for the dynamics of pop-public space in Los Angeles today.
It's a win-win situation.
Los Angeles public space begs for smart art to break up the monotony of everyday media fare, and the billboard provides a fertile position for artists who work critically and site-responsively to test their ideas in urban media space. Contemporary art gains a momentarily broad audience, and city dwellers are extended a daily invitation to reflect and contemplate. Channels are opened for experimentation, innovation, and cultural exchange."

Active Lifestyle? | Puma Phone the iPhone's Nightmare
Forget that ugly red mock up screen, it has a striking black and white interface, and this phone is a technological wonder. I personally hate the Puma brand, but this phone makes me want it nonetheless. Let's talk symantecs. The phone has a built-in solar panel. That alone is amazing. The Puma Phone features a 2.8-inch touchscreen, a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash and 6x zoom, GPS bike/run/hike trail tracker, a pedometer and even a beautifully designed nautical compass. Forward thinking in mind, it has a front-facing VGA camera which allows for video calls. It also includes a mp3 player, an FM radio and a stopwatch.

BANKSY | Rat pub sold for £114,000
By now you've probably heard the news, but we're going to jump on the Banksy band-waggon and spread the gospel as well. Liverpool's local news had this to say;
"Liverpool Banksy rat pub building sold for £114,000 at auction...Bristol-born Banksy daubed the 30ft rat on the listed building in 2004 during the Biennial festival and, although the art event did not commission the work, it was widely incorporated into the celebrations. As a listed building, if the new owner wants to paint over the rat or make any alterations to the exterior or interior of the building they must go through Liverpool City Council for planning consent." World's largest yacht | Project 1000

As the recession blues are finally getting over and as the wealthy take to the spending sprees, the optimistic signs for bigger boats have suddenly changed to super-duper boats as Berkeley March, a naval architect unveils “Project 1000.” Designed at a whopping 656 feet in length, it’s as long as two football fields end-to-end. While coming with the “world’s largest” tag, the manufacturers keep up with the industry’s stiff competition by providing customization options like gold furniture. In an effort to create a distinct and personalized vessel like no other, “Project 1000” comes equipped with over-the-top luxury toys — including a two-level cinema, a nightclub, a helipad, along with a drive-in-garage, a 100-foot swimming pool, a casino, a health spa and numerous bars and nightclubs. Expected to move the oceanic waters in under five years, “Project 1000” would unsurprisingly cost up to $1 billion (depending on the needs of the clients) and on the added info it will dwarf the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s “Eclipse,” by 99 feet. Not a bad weekend cruiser! (via)
